Fen-Phen Withdrawn From the Market
In September 1997, the FDA requested the recall of fenfluramine (Pondimin) and dexfenfluramine (Redux), two drugs taken with phentermine to produce a weight loss "drug cocktail." The manufacturers of the drugs, Wyeth-Ayerst and Interneuron Pharmaceuticals, agreed to the withdrawal. Increasing evidence that fen-phen caused heart damage led the FDA to order the recall. Phentermine, the other ingredient in the drug cocktail was not recalled.
FDA Issues Warning About Dietary Supplement
The FDA has issued a warning about LipoKinetix, a dietary supplement intended to be used for weight loss. The supplement has been linked to liver failure and/or hepatitis in at least six people. The makers of the supplement report that the drug is no longer manufactured because of difficulties in obtaining the needed ingredients. The FDA has advised consumers to seek medical attention if they experience nausea, fever, abdominal pain, weakness, or changes in skin color.
