- Headaches
- Insomnia
- Increased blood pressure
- Nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps
- Dry mouth
- Anxiety or irritability
Health Problems Associated with the use of Diet Drugs
In some cases, diet drugs have been associated with serious side effects and medical complications. Because many elevate heart rate and blood pressure, there can be serious consequences for people taking the drugs who have already been diagnosed with high blood pressure or certain other medical conditions. Some serious health problems known to have occurred with the use of diet drugs include:
- Heart-valve irregularities/Valvular heart disease - The diet drug Fen-Phen was recalled, partly because it was found to cause heart-valve problems in some patients.
- Primary Pulmonary Hypertension (PPH) - PPH is a disorder that limits blood flow to the lungs. Research suggests that the use of any appetite suppressant can increase a person's risk of PPH ten-fold.
- Brain function disruption - Because some diet drugs (like fenfluromine and dexfenfluromine) temporarily alter the levels of serotonin in the brain in order to provoke feelings of satiety, other functions regulated by serotonin can also be affected by the drugs. Serotonin regulates sleep, cognition, memory, and mood, as well as appetite.
- Mental disorders (including depression, mania, hallucinations, and anxiety disorders)
- Skin irritation, bruising, rash, or hives
- Numbness on one side of the body
